The choir of the German-Japanese Society Berlin will once again be part of Anime Messe Babelsberg this year, with members ranging from under 30 to well over 80 years of age. As in the past two years, the choir continues its tradition and brings along a multi-part mix of anime songs in German and Japanese, including enduring favourites such as the songs from the Ghibli films or the opening of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
New to the programme this year is a selection of more traditional Japanese songs, or songs set to Japanese, around the summery theme of flowers. There is even, for instance, "Hänschen Klein" in Japanese, where it is actually about a butterfly visiting the blossoms.
And so that it is a treat not only for the ears but also for the eyes, some of the members dress in original yukata or kimono, while the others wear Japanese happi jackets.
